Minor girl shows bravery, stops own marriage in Odisha

Berhampur: Protesting the child marriage system, a minor girl set an example for others by stopping her own marriage in Odisha.

Despite her family and relatives’ opposition, Rutu Nahak (14), daughter of Narayan Nahak of Chadhiapalli village under Aska block in Ganjam district showed her bravery and went against her family’s decision.

According to reports, the parents of Rutu, a class IX student, had fixed her marriage on March 9. However, Rutu had opposed the family’s decision to get married in the early age. She decided to approach the child line to stop the marriage.

On March 17, Rutu had called on child helpline number 1098 and informed about her family’s decision. She urged to stop the marriage as she wants to continue her study.

After getting phone call, the child line member rescued Rutu and deposed her at Child Welfare Committee (CWC). With efforts of both child line and CWC, Rutu’s parents realised their wrong decision. Her marriage was stopped and she continued her study.
