Miscreants hurl crude bombs at police team during raid, 5 detained

Berhampur: Some miscreants allegedly hurled crude bombs at a police team today morning during a raid in Srikshetra Vihar locality under Bada Bazaar police limits of Berhampur in Ganjam district. Police have detained five persons in this connection and they are being interrogated, a source said.

Fortunately, no policeman has been injured in the incident. Acting on an FIR that crude bombs were hurled at a house late on Tuesday night, a case was registered and a police team led by Sub-Inspector Ranjit Das carried out a raid to nab the accused, Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M expressed.

The case was registered under the Explosives Act and a probe was initiated. Bombs were reportedly hurled at a person’s house in Laxmi Nrusingha Sahi under Bada Bazaar police limits, the SP added.

“Bada Bazaar PS IIC and Berhampur SDPO formed a bigger team to nab the accused persons. We have detained three men and two women so far. They are being interrogated,” the SP stated.

Police seized a few crude bombs and bomb-making materials from the premises of the accused.

Meanwhile, a member of the Bomb Disposal Squad of police sustained grievous injuries while defusing the seized crude bombs. The cop has been identified as Ashok Kumar Pradhan. He has been admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for treatment, a senior official informed.
