Miscreants open fire at woman inside her house in Odisha’s Balasore; victim critical

Nilgiri: A woman sustained bullet injuries after two unidentified miscreants allegedly opened fire at her inside her house at Raipal village under Berhampur police limits in Balasore district, last night.

The victim was identified as Laxmi Murmu (50), wife of Rasika Murmu from the village of Nilgiri block.

According to a police source, Laxmi was attacked when she was sleeping along with her husband and their son. Two miscreants barged into their house and taking advantage of darkness the duo shot at the woman. The miscreants fled from the spot soon after committing the crime. Hearing the firing sound, Laxmi’s husband and son woke up and could see in darkness that two persons were running away.

Laxmi has sustained injuries on her chest, waist, and hands. The tribal woman was immediately rescued and admitted to a health facility in Nilgiri for treatment. She was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after her health condition deteriorated, the senior police official added.

“Laxmi is not out of danger and is critical now,” a doctor treating her in SCBMCH expressed.

On being informed by Rasika the next morning, a team of Berhampur police reached the spot and launched a probe into the crime. The exact reason behind the firing has not been ascertained yet.
