Mob sets ‘beef’ carrying container truck afire in Odisha

Berhampur: Mob today set afire an overturned container truck in Odisha’s Ganjam district after beef was reportedly found stashed in it.

According to reports, the container truck overturned on NH-16 near Randha under Golanthara police limits in the wee hours today.

Locals this morning spotted red fluid oozing out of the vehicle raising suspicion among them. Suspecting it to be beef, the mob set the vehicle on fire.

“The truck was being displaced from the spot as high tension wire was running over it. In the meantime, meat came out of it. Irate locals set the truck on fire suspecting it to be beef. We are yet to verify whether it is beef or not,” said Sadar SDPO Ashok Mohanty.

Members of Viswa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were allegedly involved in the incident.

The truck was transporting the animal product from West Bengal to Andhra Pradesh, reports added.

Fire tenders were pressed into service which took around one hour to douse the fire.
