The Southwest monsoon today arrived in Odisha, announced the Regional Meteorological Centre here today.

According to Met department monsoon has arrived in seven districts of Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Balasore, Jajpur and Kendrapada.

Similarly, its onset has been partial in the districts of Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Cuttack, Khordha, Ganjam and Gajapati, the department said.

The department has forecast that monsoon would arrive in the remaining south-western districts within two-three days.

“Most of the places in Odisha have been experiencing rains in the last three days. Yesterday heavy rainfall has been recorded in some places across the state. According to data available with us, many places have received heavy rainfall with Tikabali recording 84mm rain. Most of the places have received rains. In the last two-three days Odisha had been experiencing rains but in the nearby states of Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand rainfall was less which was not favourable for the advancement of monsoon. But today many places in Odisha, as well as nearby states, have received rainfall; the monsoon current has advanced into Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh, some parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, the whole of West Bengal, remaining parts of Sikkim, and some parts of Bihar. In Odisha monsoon has covered most parts of the coastal northern districts-Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Puri. The onset has been partial in the districts of Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati. Conditions are favourable for monsoon covering remaining districts in the next 48 hours since a cyclonic circulation has formed over the north-western Bay of Bengal on the Odisha-Andhra coast under its influence rains are likely to occur. That apart a trough line has been formed at the surface extending from Rajasthan to north-western Bay of Bengal passing through Odisha and under the influence of the system most places in Odisha are likely to experience rains in the next 24 hours. Under its influence, one or two places in northern and, coastal Odisha are likely to experience heavy rains. The rainfall is also likely to continue tomorrow. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in interior Odisha in the next 48 hours. Rains will continue over Odisha till June 20, which is likely to reduce after that. However, there is no indication of a dry spell,” informed Sarat Chandra Sahoo, director Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar briefing reporters.
