Monsoon session of Odisha Assembly adjourned sine die ahead of schedule

Bhubaneswar: The State Assembly Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro adjourned the House sine die today, thereby concluding the Monsoon Session a day before the schedule.

A total of seven bills were passed during the Monsoon session of the House which was held adhering to the Covid guidelines. Today only five bills were passed in the House. The bills which were approved by the House today were the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Bill, the Odisha Municipal Laws (amendment) Bill, 2020, the Industrial Disputes (Odisha amendment) Bill, 2020, the Odisha Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2020 and Odisha Advocates’ Welfare Fund (Amendment) Bill 2020.

Apart from this, three adjournment motions were moved for debate in the House during the session. Unstarred questions and zero hour were part of the House proceedings. There was no question hour during the session.

After paying tributes to late BJD MLA Pradeep Maharathy, who passed away during the session, the Monsoon Session was adjourned sine die.

Opposition BJP did not participate in the business of the House throughout the day. Alleging that the State government was ignoring the Opposition and the Speaker doing partiality, BJP and Congress members created ruckus in the House.

BJP legislators shouted slogans demanding the Speaker to accept an adjournment motion on PM Kisan Yojana. They also wanted a discussion on mining scam in the State. The BJP members then walked out of the Assembly and went to meet Governor Ganeshi Lal to apprise him about the issues.

Ahead of the session, Covid test of legislators and Assembly staff were carried out. It is worth to be mentioned that the session began on September 29.
