Monsoon to touch Odisha coast on June 6!

Bhubaneswar: With early onset of south-west monsoon is predicted on May 29, it is likely to touch Odisha coast around on June 6.

Normally, the monsoon hits the Kerala coast on June 1. But, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the arrival of monsoon on May 29 this year, two-three days prior to its expected date.

The monsoon will also reach Odisha early this year, said Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) Vice-chancellor Surendranath Pasupalak.

“If the monsoon will arrive in Kerala on May 29, it should touch Odisha after 10 days. As the weather condition is found normal in entire east coast this year, the monsoon is likely to hit the coast of Odisha around June 5 or 6, three-four days prior to expected dates. After it hits south part of the state, it will cover entire the state within a day,” Pashupalak said.

There will be normal rain, which will be helpful for agriculture in Odisha this year, he added.

However, the Regional Meteorological Department has not predicted exact date for arrival of monsoon in Odisha.

“The IMD has predicted the monsoon will hit Kerala on May 29. But, it is not possible to predict the dates of arrival in Odisha. With early onset of monsoon predicted in Kerala, the dates for Odisha can be predicted after analysing the direction of wind,” said Bhubaneswar MeT Director, Sharat Chandra Sahoo.
