More rains to pound Odisha in next 48 hours

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to receive heavy rainfall during next 48 hours as the well-marked low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal turned into depression today.

“Yesterday’s well-marked low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal concentrated into a depression and lay centered at 8.30 am on July 21 over the northwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 21.0N and longitude 88.0E, about 120 km east-southeast of Balasore, 90 km south-southeast of Digha and 130 km east-northeast of Chandbali,” said Bhubaneswar MeT Director and scientist HR Biswas in a release.

It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Odisha and West Bengal coast between Chandbali and Digha, close to Balasore around this evening, he added.

Under the influence of depression, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places over the districts of South Odisha and Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, and Sambalpur districts of north Odisha with on July 21.

The Regional MeT also predicted squally winds speed reaching 15-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph along and off Odisha coast during next 24 hours today.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely at a few places over the districts of interior Odisha and extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places over Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Nuapada districts of Odisha.

People may experience squally winds speed reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph very likely along and off Odisha coast on July 22.

Light to moderate rain/thundershower is very likely to occur at most of the places over the districts Odisha during next 48 hours, the Bhubaneswar MeT said.

Meanwhile, the sea condition will be rough to very rough along and off Odisha coast during next 48 hours.

The fishermen are also advised not to venture into North Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha coast during next 48 hours.
