Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate police today claimed to have solved the murder mystery involving an elderly woman from Khandagiri Bari area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.

A week after the murder, the Bharatpur police arrested the deceased woman's daughter-in-law for the killing. The police claimed to have found evidence against the accused.

Baisakhi, the daughter-in-law of the deceased Mada Palei, was the key suspect in the murder case.

The police suspected that Baisakhi slit her mother-in-law's throat over her extra-marital affair.

On August 15 evening, the 60-year-old woman was found with her throat slit while her daughter-in-law Baisakhi was lying unconscious by her side.

According to reports, Mada Palei belonged to Indragarh village under Belaguntha police limits in Ganjam district. She was admitted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar for treatment following an attack on her at her house in Ganjam in a robbery bid on July 1. Later, she was discharged from the hospital and brought to Khandagiri Bari where her elder son Rabindra, who works as a driver, was staying. Following the incident, Baishakhi visited here to look after her.

During course of investigation, the police suspected the involvement of Baisakhi in the murder of her mother-in-law. To trace the evidence, police searched for the knife used in the murder from septic tank of the house.

It is suspected that Baisakhi had cleaned her hand at toilet following murder.
