Naveen richest among 95 newly elected crorepati MLAs in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Supremo Naveen Patnaik is the richest among 95 newly elected crorepati legislators in Odisha, revealed a report.

The Chief Minister-designate Patnaik, who contested the Assembly polls from Hinjili and Bijepur seats, is the wealthiest with total assets of Rs 63,87,41,816 (both movable and immovable) followed by BJD MLAs Naba Kisore Das and Saroj Kumar Meher, the post-poll report by Odisha Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) stated.

While Naba Kishore Das from Jharsuguda Assembly Constituency has Rs 33,62,73,707 assets, Saroj Meher from Patnagarh Assembly seat in Balangir district is the third richest legislator in Odisha Assembly with assets of Rs 31,43,55,689.

As per the report based on affidavits analysed during Odisha 2019 assembly elections, 95 (65%) are crorepatis out of 146 newly elected MLAs, whereas the number was 76 in 2014 polls.

The average assets per MLA for 112 elected BJD legislators analysed is 5.08 crore and 23 BJP MLAs have average assets of Rs 1.01 crore and 9 Congress MLAs have average assets of Rs 5.67 crore.

Similarly, Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, who contested from Khandapada Assembly Constituency, is placed fourth in the list with total assets of Rs 30,29,07,946 followed by Sanjib Kumar Mallick (Rs 19,15,12,699) from Bhadrak Constituency and Congress MLA from Barabati-Cuttack, Mohammed Moquim (17,97,86,173).

However, the lone Independent MLA Makaranda Muduli from Rayagada Assembly seat topped the list of MLAs with lowest assets. As per his affidavits filed before the elections, the leader has total assets of only Rs 15,000. BJP’s newly elected MLA Madan Mohan Dutta from Balasore secured the second spot with total assets of Rs 3 lakh and BJD MLA Sunanda Das from Bari Assembly Constituency is in the third place with assets of Rs 8,53,176.

On the other hand, Congress legislator Mohammed Moquim is found on the top in the list of MLAs with high declared income in Income Tax Returns (ITR) followed by Naba Das and BJD MLA Sudhir Kumar Samal from Dhenkanal.

The report stated that Moquim’s total income shown in the ITR is Rs 4,93,81,050, while Naba Das’ total earning is Rs 1,98,84,990 and Sudhir Samal’s Rs 1,23,76,228.
