The government will launch a national-level multi-skill programme, Skill India, to impart training in traditional professions like welding, carpentry and others, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said Thursday.

He also proposed convergence of various schemes to attain this objective.

“We are confident that the measures announced in the budget will bring results. The ecosystem was created by the previous government… but the present government will take this forward… we are confident… there have been indications in the budget,” Bhavna Chopra, head, Strategic Projects, National Skill Development Corporation, said here.

She was speaking on the sidelines of the National Skills Convocation organised by Globsyn Group.

An amount of Rs.1,000 crore has been allocated for skill development of 10 lakh youth through the National Skills Development Corporation.

According to Ambarish Datta, director, BFSI, Sector Skill Council, skill development will enable the youth to get a sense of direction and get placements in the right sector.

“However, there should be a way to align the students and the skills they acquire to the needs of the industry,” Datta said.
