New Coronavirus variant: 4 UK returnees undergo COVID test in Odisha’s Cuttack

Cuttack: Four persons returned to Odisha from the United Kingdom (UK) underwent COVID-19 test in Cuttack to detect the new variant of Coronavirus.

The UK returnees have been identified as the residents of Bibekananda Lane, Mahanadi Vihar, CDA and Jagatpur in Cuttack city.

The four underwent the Coronavirus test by the Health & Family Welfare Department to ascertain the new mutant of SARS-CoV-2, which is said to be more infectious.

The returnees underwent RT-PCR test as per the government guidelines. If required, the genome of the coronavirus will be sequenced.

Currently, the UK returnees have been quarantined and they have no COVID symptoms, the sources said.

According to reports, as many as 43 persons with the travel history of United Kingdom of last 14 days have reached different parts of Odisha.

As per the data provided by Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and shared with the Odisha government, out of 43 UK returnees, 21 moved to Bhubaneswa, one to Khorda, five to Cuttack, three each to Koraput and Berhampur and two each to Nayagarh and Nabarangpur, one each to Jajpur, Rajgangpur, Sambalpur, Jagatsinghpur and Sakhigopal.

Meanwhile, the swab samples of a person with travel history of the UK and recently tested positive for the COVID-19 in Bhubaneswar have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune to detect the new strain of Coronavirus that was first found in Britain in September.
