Cuttack: With the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita coming into force today in the country, replacing the British-era criminal laws, the first FIR as per the revised criminal code was filed at Jagatpur police station in Odisha.

The first First Information Report (FIR) was filed at 1.05 PM on July 1 (Monday) at Jagatpur police station in Cuttack district over an assault incident.

The Jagatpur police registered the FIR under sections 126(2), 296, 115(2) and 351(3) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, following a complaint by one Jisan Khan of Pirabazar area against one Ramu of Jagatpur New Industrial Estate today.

As per the complaint, Ramu assaulted Jisan Khan abusing him in filthy language and threatened him with dire consequences at Khaira bridge.

Based on the complaint, the Jagatpur IIC Om Prakash Mohanty registered the case and directed SI DK Mohanty to probe.

Notably, three new criminal codes — Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam came into force today.

Replacing the colonial era Indian Penal Code (IPC), Indian Evidence Act and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), the new laws aim to modernise the justice system by introducing features like Zero FIR, online police complaint registration, electronic summons via SMS and videography of the crime scenes for all serious offences.
