New Motor Vehicle Act: Drunk driver arrested in Cuttack

Cuttack: Intensifying action against drunk drivers under revised Motor Vehicle rules, Commissionerate Police (CP) today arrested a person here in the city for driving allegedly under influence of alcohol.

The alleged offender will be produced before court today. This is the first case after implementation of MV Act in Odisha, in which a person will be sent to court for driving in inebriated state.

“Drunk driver arrested in Cuttack, will be forwarded to court. This is the first case in which drunk driver sent to court. Please be aware, driving after taking alcohol will not be tolerated. Be safe, don’t drink & drive,” the Commissionerate police tweeted.

According to sources, one Rakesh Panda of Matgajpur in Jagatsinghapur district was intercepted by the cops during vehicle checking at Nuabazar.  And was arrested after a breath analyser test report revealed that he was under the influence of alcohol. Police have also seized his two-wheeler.

CP further requested public to abstain from drunk driving as it cannot be tolerated and stringent actions will be taken against such offenders.

Notably, under the new Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2019, drunken driving may cost Rs 10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 6 months to 1 year for first offence and Rs 15,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 2 years for subsequent offence.
