Newborn theft at SCB Hospital in Cuttack: Couple returns babygirl, detained

Cuttack: A couple returned a newborn baby girl at the SCB Medical College & Hospital in Odisha’s Cuttack city as she was allegedly stolen by the duo from the SNCU of the healthcare facility, last evening.

Sweety Rout and her husband, residents of Pratapnagari area in the city who returned the baby, were detained by police for questioning.

The woman claimed that she took the baby girl with her instead of her newborn son, mistakenly.

However, the hospital authorities refuted the claims of the woman saying that she was neither admitted to the hospital nor gave birth to any baby.

“After checking the hospital record, we came to know that the woman was not hospitalised. She produced a fake discharge certificate to support her claims,” said Abinash Rout, administrative officer of SCB Hospital.

“It appears that she stole the baby girl and later resorted to lying while returning the newborn,” he said.

The hospital authorities have lodged a police complaint in this regard while further probe was underway.

Notably, wife of Tofan Kumar Jena of Chandanpur area in Puri district had yesterday given birth to two baby girls at the hospital while one of them was allegedly stolen.
