No end to farmer suicides in Odisha; five more die

Farmer suicides due to crop failure and debt burden has turned endemic in Odisha with death of five debt ridden farmers reported in the state today.

The deceased farmers hail from Jagatsinghpur, Nuapada, Kendrapada, Cuttack and Koraput districts, reports said.

One farmer identified as Laxman Gouda of Thakurpalli village under Komna block in Nuapada district allegedly committed suicide today by hanging himself to death after sustaining crop loss due to inadequate rains.

Laxman committed suicide while Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy was on a tour to the district to assess crop.

Another debt ridden farmer Rabindra Muduli of Bariamula village under Balikuda police limits of Jagasinghpur district, who had consumed poison five days ago, allegedly after sustaining crop loss and was admitted to the SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack, died while undergoing treatment today.

Other two farmers who died today were undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack.

The two farmers whose crops had failed and were under loan burden had attempted suicide.

Both were admitted to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack in critical condition for treatment. They were identified as Rabindra Mahali of Mahakalpada in Kendrapada district and Bhagaban Sahu of Agrahat of Choudwar in Cuttack district.

Besides, a farmer identified as Chandan Kaudia of Ektaguda village in Kundra block in Koraput district ended his life today allegedly due to crop failure.
