Nor’wester rain brings relief to coastal Odisha; heatwave to continue in western dists

Bhubaneswar: Amidst high humidity, the nor’wester rain brought huge relief from scorching heat in coastal and northern regions of the state this morning. However, the heatwave will continue in western Odisha districts for the next 48 hours.

The temperature is likely to be dropped marginally in the coastal districts and the thunder shower is on the cards for several districts in north, coastal and south Odisha districts under influence of the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, the IMD predicted today.

“The temperature will be reduced in coastal parts of the state due to cloud patch resulted by the cyclonic circulation over the northeast Bay of Bengal and eastcentral Bay of Bengal. Under influence of the cloud patch several costal districts experienced rain last night,” said weather scientist Laxmikant Giri.

As per the quantum of rainfall record received by the regional meteorological centre, Keonjhar registered the highest rain with 42.4 mm followed by Bhubaneswar (34.4 mm) on Wednesday night.

“The nor’wester rain will continue for next four to five days especially in north Odisha districts such as Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur; coastal districts including Puri and Khordha; and south Odisha districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal and Koraput,” he said.

Earlier, the IMD had issued heatwave warning for 17 districts for next two days.

Odisha experienced the hottest day yesterday with more than half of the districts recorded the temperature above 40 degree Celsius.

Around 16 towns stood above 40 degree C and 6 towns had above 45 degree C yesterday. Sambalpur was the hottest city with 45.6 degree C.

“The heatwave condition will prevail in the western Odisha for the next 48 hours,” Giri said.

Speaking about monsoon, he informed that the exact date for onset of monsoon in Odisha is yet to be predicted.

“The arrival of the monsoon is likely to be delayed due to possible weakening of the seasonal wind branch over the Bay of Bengal under impact of very severe cyclonic storm VAYU that will hit Gujarat coast today,” he added.
