Now, rail roko to attract criminal prosecution in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Agitators beware! From now on, rail roko in Odisha will attract criminal prosecution besides imposition of penalty.

A High Level Security Committee for Railways today held its first meeting where the participants deliberated on security issues.

The meeting was presided over by DGP RP Sharma, also the chairman of the newly-constituted Committee.

“Rail Roko have caused financial loss to the Government and inconvenience to passengers. In view of this, Railways have decided to criminally prosecute all agitators of Rail Roko,” IG (RPF) Atul Pathak said.

Sharma also directed GRP Officers for similar action as and when required. It was decided to apprise the courts of financial loss occurring due to rail roko so that the agitators can be made financially liable also under the Railways Act.

“It was decided to bring more number of railway stations under CCTV coverage. It was observed that due to CCTV coverage many cases of theft have been detected in major railway stations like Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Puri, Rourkela and Jharsuguda. Besides, patrolling will be intensified in vulnerable areas affected by Left Wing Extremism” Sharma added.

Director (Intelligence) Sunil Roy, IGP (Railway) Arun Bothra, Joint Director (SIB) Vinita Sharma, IG-cum-CSC SE Railway SK Sinha, DIG (Intelligence) N Bhoi among others were present in the meeting.
