Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a student of a private nursing college in Odisha capital sustained serious injuries in an alleged suicide attempt after jumping from the third floor roof of the hostel building of the college today.

The nursing student, who has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital with multiple fractures, is a student of Hi-Tech Nursing College, an institution of the same group that runs the private medical college.

The injured, who is a third-year student of B Sc (Nursing), attempted suicide after being allegedly subjected to mental harassment by the college authorities.

Family members of the nursing student have alleged that college authorities had subjected her to mental harassment forcing her to take the extreme step.

“I had come with my sister after she complained that she was being harassed mentally. They behaved badly with us. They shouted at us. They called my sister characterless. I have video footage of that. Now for their deeds my sister is in the ICU and struggling for her life,” alleged brother of the injured nursing student.

On the other hand, college authorities have refuted the allegations while claiming that the student was a psychosis patient and was under treatment for a long period of time.

“She was having psychosis problem. She was under treatment since long time. She often threatened to commit suicide. She was with her mother and all of a sudden she jumped from the third floor. Even her mother was unaware of her move. We immediately shifted her to the hospital and she has been admitted to the ICU. CT Scan and other procedures have been conducted. She is okay but has multiple fractures,” clarified Asish Bala Mohapatra, Principal, Hi-Tech Nursing College.

A case has been registered at Mancheswar Police Station in this matter on the basis of a complaint lodged by the family of the injured student.
