OCAC CEO’s WhatsApp number hacked from Bengaluru

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Crime Branch traced Bengaluru link in hacking of WhatsApp number of Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC) CEO Manoj Kumar Patnaik.

The online fraudsters hacked the WhatsApp number from Bengaluru. The probe team will soon leave for Bengaluru for further investigation, informed Crime Branch ADG Sanjeev Panda yesterday.

The amount swindled by the hackers by sending phishing messages to people in contact list of OCAC CEO was credited to three bank accounts. Initiative has been taken to freeze those bank accounts, he said.

The fraudsters had hacked the WhatsApp number of Chief Executive Officer of OCAC Manoj Kumar Patnaik, who is also the Additional Secretary of State Electronics And Information Technology (E&IT) Department and duped at least five people in his contact list of around Rs 7 lakh by sending them fraudulent messages.

Patnaik realised that his phone was hacked when he received phone calls from his friends and colleagues asking them about his health condition.

Reports said that posing as Patnaik, hackers had asked for money from people in Patnaik’s contact list citing ‘medical emergency’.

The victims lodged complaint at the Saheed Nagar Police Station on Thursday. Taking cognizance of allegations, Odisha Crime Branch filed a suo-moto case and launched investigation to trace the cyber fraudsters.
