Octogenarian wins battle against COVID-19 in Odisha

Phulbani: Scripting a story of hope during the battle against corona virus, an 81-year old Gopinath Dakua of Kandhamal district has survived the virus and emerged triumphant after a 15-day ordeal.

Dakua, a native of Tala Indragada in Raikia Block of Kandhamal district, was initially undergoing treatment at Indragada Public Health Centre (PHC) after suffering from influenza and cough. After his health conditions deteriorated and he developed symptoms of Covid-19, Dakua was shifted to the nearby Temporary Medical Centre (PMC) at Kalinga Model Residential School (KMRS) at Raikia on June 28, 2020.

As he was showing symptoms of Covid-19, swab test was conducted and he was found Corona positive. Though his condition was stable, he was shifted to a Covid Hospital at Phulbani on July 4 for his treatment.

His health condition improved gradually July 8, 2020 and finally he was discharged from the Covid Hospital on July 13. After being discharged, Dakua expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for providing free treatment to Covid patients. He also expressed his gratitude to the district administration and the staff of the Covid Care Hospital.

“During my treatment at the Covid Hospital, Doctors, Nurses and other staff attended sincerely and took good care of me. Good quality food was also provided at the Covid Hospital,” said the octogenarian.

Dakua is a bright example of hope and courage to many Corona affected persons. In spite of his old age and various ailments, he defied Corona virus which gives a positive message that all should be hopeful to win the fight against the disease, said an official.
