Odia diaspora of Utkal Samaj Rhein-Main observes Sabitri Brata in Germany’s Frankfurt

Bhubaneswar: Utkal Samaj Rhein-Main from Frankfurt in Germany celebrated its first ‘Sabitri Brata’ puja by Odia women folk with the collaboration of Hari Om Temple. The event was graced with a tremendous response by the Odia diaspora in Rhein-Main, a spokesperson of the Utkal Samaj said.

“Being away from home, a registered Odia community Utkal Samaj Rhein-Main celebrated Odia culture and festival in Germany,” Vice-President of Utkal Samaj Amit Kumar Rawal expressed.

It is pertinent to mention, Sabitri Brata is a day of fasting observed by married Hindu Odia women on Amavasya in the month of Jyeshtha. The fasting is dedicated to Sabitri, who once saved her husband Satyavan from being taken away by the God of Death – Yamraj. According to Hindu mythology, Yamraj was later moved by the devotion of Sabitri and hence returned the Life of her husband.

Clad in new sarees, women folk from the Odia community visit temples and pay their obeisance to the deities seeking long life for their husbands. They observe it as a vow with great dedication. Married women fast during the day and listen to the story of Sabitri and Satyaban. When the performance of worship is over, they bow before their husbands and elderly family members for blessings.
