10 gates of Hirakud dam closed in Odisha

Sambalpur: Hirakud dam authorities decided to close 10 sluice gates opened for discharging floodwater to downstream of Mahanadi River.

Ten gates were closed today to maintain the water level in the reservoir, informed the Hirakud dam authorities.

The water is being released from the dam through another 10 gates.

Currently, the water level at the reservoir recorded 620.45 ft against storage capacity of 630 ft by 11.00 am on August 16, a day after opening 20 sluice gates to release excess floodwater.

However, flood-like situation is not expected in Mahanadi basin following release of floodwater as water flow is falling at various points in Odisha.

There is no possibility of major flood situation in Odisha as quantum of rainfall has decreased in past 24 hours and almost all the rivers are flowing below the danger marks, informed Water Resources Secretary Pradipta Kumar Jena today.

Yesterday, the Hirakud dam had released water for second time through 20 gates in phases following incessant rain in upper catchment areas of Mahanadi River.
