Bhubaneswar: A team of sleuths from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) caught four passengers on May 6 (Monday) with around 3.77 Kgs of smuggled gold valued at Rs 2.79 Crore at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar.
Four accused persons have been arrested. The gold in paste form was kept in their rectum, which was seized from their possession by the DRI officials following a raid.
Acting on specific intelligence, the officers of DRI identified four passengers who arrived from Dubai at Bhubaneswar. Questioning of the passengers upon arrival revealed that all four of them had attempted to smuggle the gold in paste form and had concealed the yellow metal in their rectum.
Investigation resulted in the recovery of a total of 12 capsules containing gold in paste form. Heat treatment of the contraband resulted in a compound preparation and gold weighing 3.77 Kgs was recovered under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
A detailed investigation is underway, a DRI official source informed.
