Odisha actor thrashed by cops in Bhadrak; SP orders probe

Bhubaneswar: An actor in Bhadrak district of Odisha was allegedly beaten up by four police personnel yesterday night.

Victim Gopinath Nayak of Telanati sustained injuries on his face, hands, back and other parts of the body. He has been admitted to a Community Health Centre (CHC) at Agarapada in Bhadrak.

Bhadrak Superintendent of Police (SP) Varun Guntupalli has ordered a probe in to the incident and transferred four personnel of Agarapada police—an ASI, a constable and two home guards to the district police headquarters.

The incident took place while Nayak was returning home from Bhadrak in his car at around 11.30 pm last night.

“Four personnel of Agarapada police, who were conducting patrolling in the locality, intercepted me on the road and asked for all documents of my car. I produced all the documents before them. But, they immediately sought money from me. The four personnel hurled abuses at me and beat me mercilessly with their batons after I refused to pay the amount,” alleged Nayak.

He further alleged that the four policemen were heavily drunk at the time of the incident. “They tore my clothes and took away my mobile phone. My family has lodged a complaint in this regard with the IIC of Agarapada police,” Nayak claimed.

The actor, who usually performs at theatres, has urged the Bhadrak SP to initiate stern action against the four police personnel.

“The four police personnel should be suspended from service. The SP should initiate appropriate action against them,” Nayak said.
