Odisha Assembly passes bill on property rights to slum dwellers

Bhubaneswar: In a historical move to provide land to slum dwellers residing in municipalities and Notified Area Councils (NACs) of the state, Odisha Land Rights to Slum Dwellers Bill, 2017 was passed in the Assembly here today.

It was a historical decision for the slum dwellers, said Housing & Urban Development Minister Niranjan Pujari.

Welcoming the legislation, Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra said that the bill will help the poor people, who are residing in the slums.

Earlier in August, Odisha cabinet had approved the proposal to provide land rights to the slum dwellers.

The urban poor in slum will get land rights for residential use that is heritable, mortgageable and non-transferrable. In corporate areas, limited transferrable rights will be given.

Four significant bills passed in House today

Apart from Odisha Land Rights to Slum Dwellers Bill, three more bills — Sales tax amendment, motor vehicle taxation amendment, agricultural produce marketing amendment bill — were passed in the Assembly.
