Odisha Assembly stalled again over Justice MM Das and Das Burma issue

Speaker Niranjan Pujari today adjourned proceeding of Odisha Assembly till 3 PM as opposition members came to the well of the House and shouted slogans demanding removal of chit fund scam inquiry commission head Justice MM Das and Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare (FS&CW) Minister Sanjay Das Burma.

“Justice MM Das has to go for his remarks. The ruling party members are involved in the chit fund scam. Their MP is jail. The ruling party is running away from a debate as it would uncover their mask. The way the ruling party stalled the proceedings today is unacceptable. The Government is trying to use its sheer numbers to silence the voice of the opposition, but it is not going to work. The opposition is united,” said Congress Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati speaking to reporters outside the Assembly.

Even after the Speaker’s suggestion against wearing jackets containing slogans in the House yesterday, BJP MLAs were seen wearing the same today. The jackets had slogans that sought ouster of Justice MM Das and Das Burma.

“Over 20-30 lakh people have suffered in the state because of the chit fund scam. Involvement of Sanjay Das Burma has been proven in many ways. I fail to see why has the Chief Minister, who earlier sacked ministers simply based on allegations, become so helpless. This government is frustrated and lacks alternatives,” said BJP MLA Pradeep Purohit.

“So far as ruling of the speaker against debating a sub judice matter is concerned, I would like to ask how the Assembly discussed Polavaram issue and the coal scam when the matters were sub judice in the Supreme Court. I see no problems in discussing the money in the corpus fund, the status of Justice MM Das etc. It is not fair for the Speaker to defend the ruling party,” he added.

The ruling party members, on the other hand, were seen complaining ‘central negligence’ over the supply of excess wheat instead of rice to the state and shouted slogans in the house.
