Odisha athlete Purnima Hembram bags Ekalabya Award

Promising woman athlete of Odisha was conferred with the prestigious 22nd Ekalabya Award for the year 2014 here today.

She received the award from former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja.

The jury members of the Award Committee of Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT) unanimously selected her for the award which carries a cash award of Rs 2 lakh, a trophy and a citation.

Purnima has won a gold medal in the heptathlon event of the 15th Asian Junior Athletics Championship in Sri Lanka on June 2012 and a silver medal in the 53rd National Open Athletics Championship at Ranchi in 2013.

Besides Purnima, two sportswomen— cricketer Rosanara Parwin and international rowing star Manjula Xess- received cash prize of Rs 50,000 each and citations.

The award, instituted by IMPaCT, the charitable wing of the IMFA Group, the leading integrated ferroalloys producer in the country since 1993, is given to young sportspersons of Odisha every year in recognition of their outstanding performances in the preceding two years.

Among others, MPs Biajayanta Panda and Ranjib Biswal were present on the occasion.
