Odisha bans school students from riding motorcycles

Bhubaneswar: Taking strong initiative following enforcement of new Motor Vehicles (MV) Act to prevent school students from facing road accidents, Odisha government has imposed restriction on them from riding motorcycles.

As per the new guidelines issued by Directorate of Higher Secondary Education, the students below 18 years old will not be allowed to ride motorcycles on road.

The school authorities (both government and private) have been asked to restrict the students from bringing motorbikes to the premises.

If any student is found not following the guidelines, the school authorities have been directed to draw attention of the Regional Transport Office (RTO).

Sources said that the decision has been taken in view of rash driving by the school and Plus II students on main roads especially in urban areas. The school authorities will keep watch on the students preventing them from riding motorcycles for road safety. They will also inform the guardians of students regarding the new guidelines by the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education.

Besides, the RTOs have been asked to cancel the registration certificates of 146 school buses that do not possess fitness certificates. Also, action will be taken against the school buses and vans for overloading of students.
