Odisha: Bhubaneswar airport runway to be shut down temporarily for 8 months

Bhubaneswar: Flights at the Biju Patnaik International Airport will be rescheduled from this November as recarpeting work of the runway to be carried out in phases, said an official of the airport today.

Speaking to media persons, the airport director Suresh Chandra Hota said the airport is planning to shut down the runway in two phases for recarpeting work. In the first phase, the runway will remain closed from 10 pm to 5.30 am starting November 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020. Similarly, in the second phase, the airport authorities will shut down the runway from 10.30 am to 6 pm beginning April 1, 2020 to June 30, 2020.

To ensure there is no flight disruptions, the airport has already asked the airlines to reschedule their flights, he added. “Prior to this, we have sought an approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to undertake the runway recarpeting work,” Hota said.

Also, the parallel taxi track joining work will be taken up during this runway shutdown period.

The last recarpeting work of the airport runway was done in 2007.
