Odisha: Bijepur by-poll likely in October

Bhubaneswar: The Bijepur Assembly Constituency in Bargarh district of Odisha is likely to go to by-poll in October this year.

The date for the by-poll to the Assembly seat, vacated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik following thumping victory in 2019 elections, may be announced soon by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Recently, the ECI had directed three state governments — Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand — to transfer the officials posted in one place more than 3 years by October 31. The directive indicates that the by-poll in Bijepur Assembly seat may take place in October third week or before Diwali.

The Bijepur Assembly seat is lying vacant after CM Naveen Patnaik resigned from the seat on June 2. The Constituency in western Odisha was one of the two assembly segments that the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Supremo had contested in the 2019 Assembly polls. However, he quit it keeping his traditional seat of Hinjili that he has been winning since 2000.

Worth mentioning, the tenure of Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assemblies is slated to end on Nov 2, Nov 9 and December 27 respectively.

Sources said that the ECI is mulling over conducting the polls simultaneously in these states.
