Tension subsided at the office of the Director General of Police (DGP) here, which had seen BJP workers scuffle with personnel of Odisha police earlier in the day, this afternoon after a delegation of senior BJP leaders submitted a memorandum to DGP Sanjeeb Marik demanding the arrest of suspended former Kendrapara SP Satish Gajbhiye and initiation of criminal proceedings against him.

Earlier in the day, thousands of workers of the Odisha BJP had violated prohobitory orders and gheraoed the DGP office demanding a CBI inquiry into the affairs of Sarathi Baba and the immediate arrest and dismissal from service of former Kendrapara SP Satish Gajbhiye.

“The DGP said he would look into our demands and assured us to take necessary action against the suspended SP. We also told the DGP that we would continue the agitation if our demands are not met in time,” said BJP leader Pratap Sarangi, who was part of the delegation that met the DGP..

“BJP has ghearoed the DGP office demanding the arrest of Gajbhiye and his dismissal from the service. We condemn the manner in  which the police have enforced section 144 around the DGP office and arrested the party leaders and workers from their houses in the city last night. It seems that they have taken a leaf out of Satush Gajbhiye’s book of controlling crowds,” said BJP leader Samir De.

“The way the former Kendrapara SP had dealt with the Kendrapara district BJP president and lawyer Duryodhan Sahu by beating him up and forcing him to perform sit-ups on the street which the Taliban extremists do, his suspension by the state government is not enough. We want his immediate arrest,” said BJP leader Rudra Narayan Pani.

“We are also demanding that the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) should probe the illegal acquisition of property by Gajbhiye and his role in the chit fund scam,” Pani said.

Earlier in the day, the BJP workers led by senior leaders including the state unit president KV Singhdeo, senior leader Biswabhusan Harichandan, Bijay Mohapatra, Manmohan Samal, Samir De and Rudra Narayan Pani led a huge rally from Mata Matha in the city and marched towards the DGP office.

Several BJP workers and leaders from Mayurbhanj, Baleswar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapara and other districts have joined the rally, reports said.

Apprehending law and order situation, police have made elaborate security arrangements deploying 30 platoons of armed police force. Section 144 was clamped around the DGP office as a preventive measure and barricades were erected to prevent the demonstrators from entering the premises. But it did not deter the demonstrators, who marched to the DGP office.
