Bhubaneswar: Senior leader Bhartruhari Mahtab, who had resigned from the BJD and contested for the Cuttack Lok Sabha seat as a BJP candidate, secured victory in the constituency with a comprehensive margin of 57077 votes.
Mahtab, a six-time Cuttack MP, defeated his nearest rival BJD's Santrupt Misra, thereby winning the seat for the seventh consecutive time.
While Mahtab got 531601 votes (47.43%), 474524 (42.34%) votes were polled in favour of Misra.
Mahtab had made Cuttack Lok Sabha seat an unbreachable fort for the BJD by winning from the constituency in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019.
He also managed to secure the constituency this time, but for BJP.
Mahtab had resigned from the BJD in March, a day after a special court framed charges against him in a 13-year-old case, in which he allegedly assaulted a police officer in Cuttack.
