The incident occurred when block grant teachers were marching in a massive rally from Station square towards the State Assembly.
At least 50 block grant teachers were arrested by the police in this connection.
“Teachers with equal qualifications and experience are getting salaries under different pay scales. We have been opposing this for the last 30 years. Even the apex court has decreed equal pay for equal work. But the government is yet to wake up from its slumber and listen to the grievances of the teachers,” said Block Grant Secondary School Teachers and Employees’ Association president Prashant Mohapatra.
“We will boycott panchayat polls if the government fails to fulfill our demands. From 24th of this month we along with students and their guardians will hold rallies in every panchayat on Saturdays and Sundays till panchayat polls are over,” he warned.
