The 1981-batch officer was born in Jagatsinghpur district. He will take charge on October 1 on repatriation from central deputation.

Even though he was set to retire on June 30, he has been given an extension of three months. Khuntia will replace incumbent Arvind Jadhav whose term ends on September 30.

Though Upendra Tripathy is the senior most IAS officer in the State, the fact that he is set to retire next month forced the Chief Minister to overlook him for the post.

The Chief Minister was under pressure to choose a Chief Secretary with a clean image after a controversy surrounding Arvind Jadhav erupted pertaining to a land deal. This is said to have given Khuntia an edge over additional chief secretary K Ratnaprabha – who was speculated to be in the race for the position.
