Odisha cadre IAS officer’s bicycle ride now Talk of Town

Nayagarh: Consider it an initiative to monitor implementation of welfare programmes or fitness freak, Odisha cadre bureaucrat’s bicycle ride with sporty look has left people stunned in the Maoist-dominated Nayagarh district.

Sporting a T shirt and shorts with bicycle ride upto around 75 km to reach common people is a unique stroke by Nayagarh Collector Arindam Dakua sending a tough message to entire staff in the district administration to be alert to deliver best services to people.

The unscheduled trip to various parts of the district on a bicycle has now become the talk of the town.

Equipped with safety gears, Dakua started his journey from his official residence on a bicycle on Oct 5 (Thursday) and reached Mahipur via DRDA Road. After few minutes halt, he visited Nuagaon and Bahadajhola and reached Nayagarh enroute Odagaon and Sarankula. He covered around 75 km yesterday during his journey.

When asked about the unconventional idea, Dakua said that the initiative is more to do with keeping oneself fit.

Earlier, he used to play gentleman’s game cricket for keeping himself fit.

Now he is playing tennis and riding bicycle upto 15-20 km every morning to make it as habit for a good health. He used to travel from Nayagarh to Mahipur every morning and makes his way back to his official residence from there.

“As Thursday was official holiday for Kumarpurnima, I wanted to go extra mile on my bicycle. However, it is completely different from my profession,” Dakua said.

Apart from physical fitness, there is no other purpose behind riding bicycle in the morning and traveling long distance, he added.
