Odisha: Carcass of female elephant found in Kuldiha sanctuary

Nilagiri: The Forest department staff today recovered a decomposed carcass of a female elephant from Kuldiha sanctuary. Though the exact reason is not known, it is suspected that the female elephant died after a fight with a tusker.

During a routine patrolling, the Forest staff initially spotted the carcass and informed the higher-ups. After receiving information, DFO Biswaraj Panda, Kuldiha Ranger Bijaya Mohapatra along with other Forest officials and veterinary doctors reached the spot.

The DFO said the elephant aged about five years died three-four days back. After conducting a post mortem, the elephant was buried near the spot.

Locals questioned the reason being cited by the Forest officials.

“As the Forest staff patrol in the area frequently, how come the elephant’s carcass went unnoticed for three-four days. We demand a high-level probe to know the exact reason behind the elephant death,” said a resident of nearby village.
