Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, Chandan Kumar Mahapatra (31), personal assistant (PA) of newly-elected Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, died in a road accident in Siripur area under Nayapalli police limits in the city on Tuesday.

Chandan's untimely demise occurred just a few hours before Majhi's official announcement as the new Chief Minister.

The incident took place at around 11 AM when a car hit a motorcycle on which Chandan was travelling. He fell from the two-wheeler and sustained critical injuries.

The car continued to speed forward, colliding with two motorcycles and a car, resulting in injuries to three persons, including a woman present in the second car.

Though locals rescued Chandan and rushed him to the Capital Hospital here, he was declared dead on arrival.

Chandan was a resident of Aiginia area in Bhubaneswar.

On the other hand, Majhi was evidently heartbroken over the death of his PA. The CM conducted the last rites of Chandan at Satya Nagar crematorium here before heading to the BJP's legislature party meeting, where he was elected as the Chief Minister.

Majhi was seen entering the meeting venue with teary eyes as he lost his PA on arguably the best day of his life.
