Odisha chit fund scam: MM Das panel submits third interim report

Bhubaneswar/Cuttack: Justice M M Das Commission of Inquiry probing the multi-crore mega chit fund scam in Odisha today submitted its third interim report to the state government’s Home Department.

The Commission’s Secretary submitted the third interim report to Asit Tripathy, Special Secretary Home Department at the State Secretariat here.

In its third interim report, the Commission has identified 41,519 small investors after registering cases against 176 companies and conducting inquiry thereupon.

The Commission in its report has recommended for refund to the identified affected depositors. It has also suggested on the means to be adopted for refunding money to the identified depositors.

“In the course of the inquiry I had advised chit fund companies to refund money to the depositors. Some of these companies have refunded money to the depositors. As of now, 1,200-1,300 depositors have got back their deposits,” said Justice M M Das speaking to reporters.

“In the fourth phase, we have identified complaints against 342 firms. We are serving them notices in phases. After they appear before us and keep their stand, we will identify depositors. In this phase cases of 1, 38,388 depositors will be taken up,” he added.

“Several firms are not appearing before the Commission, while notices to some are returning back with remarks like ‘addressee not found’ and ‘addressee left’. This is causing the delay in the inquiry process. Out of those who are appearing before the Commission, 50 percent are willing to refund money to the depositors. In some cases they agree and then go missing,” Justice Das explained.
