Odisha CM lays stone for Welspun Group’s integrated textiles facility at Choudwar

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today laid foundation stone for Welspun Group’s integrated textiles manufacturing facility and warehousing complex at Choudwar in Odisha’s Cuttack district.

More than 30,000 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

The integrated complex is coming up with an investment of over Rs 3,000 crore and is expected to create over employment opportunities for around 10,000 people.

Welspun Group is one of the largest integrated textiles manufacturing companies in the country with facilities in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Telangana. The company is investing in the entire textile value chain in Odisha.

It will be procuring cotton from the farmers in the western and southern districts of Kalahandi, Balangir, Rayagada and Gajapati for its textiles unit.

Speaking on the occasion, BK Goenka, the Chairman of Welspun Group, extended his gratitude towards the Chief Minister and the state government. “We are grateful for the support and commitment shown by the Chief Minister and the Government of Odisha. Their dedication to fostering an environment conducive to industrial growth and development has been instrumental in bringing our project to fruition. Through the integrated textiles manufacturing facility and warehousing complex, we want to create a world-class textiles ecosystem in Odisha and take forward the legacy of Biju Babu.”

“The Welspun Group is also committed to improving the quality of life in Choudwar by developing several amenities for the public”, he added.

A team from IPICOL had met Goenka and the Welspun Group representatives during the pre-Make-In-Odisha (MIO Conclave) 2022 road shows and had convinced them to explore Odisha as a potential destination before the investment was finalized in October, 2023.

The Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his enthusiasm for the project and stated “This transformative investment by the Welspun Group is a testament to Odisha’s growing prominence as a hub for industrialization and economic progress. We are immensely proud to support initiatives that not only contribute to our state’s development but also empower our workforce.”

The Chief Minister added, “The Welspun project is expected to generate over 10,000 jobs, significantly impacting the local employment landscape. It promises to act as a catalyst for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), promoting business growth and innovation within a vibrant ecosystem. This initiative not only signifies a major leap towards economic advancement but also reinforces Odisha’s commitment to sustainable industrial development.”

The Orissa Textiles Mill (OTM) at Choudwar, once eastern India’s largest composite cotton mill, was co-founded by late Chief Minister Biju Patnaik. The investment by Welspun Group is set to reignite industrial growth and development in the region as well as directly support the growth of cotton growers across the state.
