Odisha: ‘College girl had committed suicide after lesbian partner rejected marriage proposal’

Balasore: A college girl in Odisha’s Balasore district, who has committed suicide on September 28 last, was allegedly in a lesbian relationship, police said today.

She had killed herself when her lesbian partner refused to marry her, police said.

Sasmita Dey (19), a Plus three final year student of Nilgiri Women’s College here, was in a lesbian relationship with her friend from from a different college for around more one-and-half years. Their relationship came to light after the police recovered suicide note and other evidences.

“A diary, SMSs and WhatsApp messages revealed that they were in a lesbian relationship,” said Nilgiri Inspector-In-Charge Nalita Modi.

“The deceased and the accused were in a very close relationship. The deceased insisted to marry the accused. When her friend rejected the proposal, she killed herself,” Modi added.

Following this, the accused was arrested under section -306 of the IPC on the charge of abetting suicide and forwarded to court, the IIC informed.

Notably, the 19-year-old girl, a resident of Baliapal area in Balasore district, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room on September 28.
