Odisha college teacher gets 7-yr jail for impregnating student on pretext of marriage

Jajpur: A court in Odisha awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment to a Lecturer working at a women’s college after convicting him for establishing sexual relationship with a girl student on pretext of marriage and impregnating her.

The Jajpur District and Sessions Court Judge Srikant Mishra convicted the Lecturer, Naba Kishore Rana on basis of the testimony given by 15 witnesses and medical report submitted in the court. Also, a fine of Rs 10,000 has been imposed on the Lecturer. If Naba Kishore fails to pay the fine, he will serve additional three months of jail term.

In 2016, Naba Kishore was working as a Lecturer at a women’s college in Badachana area whereas the young woman from Bairee area was then a Plus II student at the women’s college. The young woman had been visiting the Lecturer’s house to attend private tuition at his house.

Even though the Lecturer was married, he established physical relationship with the young woman on the promise to marry her. Subsequently, the young woman got impregnated. She narrated the matter before her mother, who sought an explanation from the Lecturer.

But Naba Kishore denied vehemently to the whole episode. Out of public shame the young woman’s mother then reportedly died by suicide.

On September 10, 2016, the young woman lodged a police complaint at the Barchana police station against the Lecturer. The police then arrested him after registering a case no 146/2016 at the Barchana PS for establishing physical intimacy with the young woman by giving false promise to marry her.
