Bhubaneswar: A six-hour 'Chaka Jam' observed by the Odisha unit of Congress from 6 am to 12 noon opposing the hike in prices of petrol and diesel across the country affected vehicular movement in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack today.

Holding banners and party flags, Congress leaders and workers resorted to picketing at several key points in the two cities this morning. Many cars, buses and trucks remained stranded at various junctions in both the cities due to the 'Chaka Jam'.

Congress activists were seen asking commuters not to use vehicles as a mark of protest against the hike in fuel price.

Several Congress members, who were staging protest at AG Chhak here, were detained by police.

On the other hand, a student of Khapuria ITI sustained injuries after allegedly being attacked by Congress workers near Madhupatna Chhak in Cuttack today. The youth has lodged a police complaint in this regard.

Blaming both the Central and State Governments for the increase in fuel price, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Niranjan Patnaik said, "Both the Centre and State can keep the fuel price under check by reducing taxes levied on it."

"Overwhelmed by the support we have received from residents of Bhubaneswar & Cuttack to our call for protest against rising fuel prices. It's not a bandh, but a protest by Odisha Congress where people from all walks of life have joined us in not using their vehicles till 12 noon," Patnaik said.
