Odisha cop gets 5-year rigorous imprisonment. Here’s why

Jeypore: The court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Jeypore today sentenced a police official to five years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for threatening a person to entangle him in a false case and assaulting him at police station.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on convict Nalini Kanta Mohapatra. In the case of non-payment of the fine, he will undergo an additional RI of six months.

According to Vigilance sources, Mohapatra, the then IIC of Bissamcuttack in Rayagada district,  had demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 from one Radhakanta Das and threatened him to entangle him in a false case in 2010.

Das had reported the matter to the anti-corruption agency and a trap was laid by Vigilance sleuths accordingly. When the officials arrived at the police station, Mohapatra was assaulting Das after detention.

Subsequently, a case was registered against Mohapatra followed by filing of chargesheet. Adjudicating the case, Judge Srikant Mishra convicted Mohapatra and awarded him the punishment.
