Odisha cops bust vehicle looters’ gang; 3 held

Pipili: Odisha police busted a gang looting bikes and cars with arrest of its three members here in Puri district yesterday.

The accused persons were identified as Tahir Akhtar alias Niki (22), Mohammad Karim alias Tipu (28) and Asif Khan (22). All were the residents of Pipili. The gang fell under Pipili Police net during an investigation into an SUV theft case.

The gang members were looting the vehicles from Bhubaneswar, Khordha and Puri.

According to reports, an SUV (Bolero) bearing registration number OR 02 BA-2685 was looted in front of a resident’s house at Jagannathpur village under Pipili police limits on July 9. Based on the complaint, police began probe into the case in which some suspects were under the scanner. During the investigation, police reached the accused Niki. Following interrogation, the cops managed to nab two of his associates.

While three were caught, four others of the vehicle looters’ gang are still at large, said Pipili Police Station IIC Sarat Sahoo.

Police seized an SUV (TATA Sumo) and 10 two-wheelers including a bullet, a scooter and two bikes from their possession.

The trio has been sent to the Nimapara sub-jail after their bail applications were turned down by a local court in Pipili.

Earlier, several cases were lodged against them in various vehicle loot cases at Chandrasekharpur, Laxmisagar and Mancheswar police stations in Bhubaneswar.
