Twin City Commissionerate Police today forwarded an accused to court who was brought here after his arrest from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh on charges of looting a jewellery shop owner in Cuttack city of Odisha.

The arrested identified as Tapan Kumar from Bihar was employed at a jewellery shop at Naya Sarak area in the city owned by Sangeet Saha.

According to police, Sangeet had filed a complaint of gold theft from his shop on May 9 this year at Lalbag Police Station.

Police registered a case and started probe into the incident.

During investigations, police found that Tapan had gone to Kolkata with two kgs of gold to make ornaments for the shop.

However, he did not return to Cuttack and absconded.

Police traced the location of the accused in Kanpur by tracking his mobile phone number, following which a special team of Commissionerate police went to Kanpur and arrested him with seizure of 1.250 gms gold from his possession.

During interrogation, he has confessed that he has sold rest of the yellow metal. Investigations are on to recover the gold already sold, said a police official.
