Odisha cops rescue Kandhamal girls from Tamil Nadu

Odisha police in association with their Tamil Nadu counterparts rescued as many as five minor girls from Kandhamal working as bonded labourers in a textile mill in the southern Indian state.

According to reports, the police team rescued the girls from the mill at Pallapalayam on the outskirts of Coimbatore last night.

The action comes after a woman – mother of one of the rescued girls – filed a complaint alleging her daughter and others have been working in the mill as bonded labourers.

The rescued girls are said to be below 14 years and have boarded trains to Odisha this morning, reports added.

It may be mentioned here that thousands of people migrate from Odisha to various parts of the country, mainly to Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, in search of work. These workers are lured by Dadan Sardars (labour contractors) to provide jobs outside Odisha with lucrative remuneration. However, majority of them are exploited by either the middlemen or employers.
