Odisha cops seize over Rs 30 lakh from a car

Police today seized over Rs 30 lakh from a car near a toll gate on NH-5 in Odisha’s Cuttack district.

According to reports, Tangi police seized a car with the cash comprising of new currency notes of various denominations including Rs 2000 from near Tangi toll gate.

Police had got reliable inputs about cash being carried in a car following which they intercepted it near the toll gate.

The cops have detained three persons from Jaleswar area in Balasore district for interrogation.

Police are probing as to why the trio was carrying such a huge amount in a car considering the fact that government has enforced restrictions on cash withdrawal posed the demonetization move since November 8.

Preliminary investigations revealed that two of them are betel nut traders and had come to Cuttack to receive payment from businessmen. The cash stashed in four bags had bundles of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100 and Rs 2000 denominations.

Police sources said that they would seek the help of IT officials in investigation. Next course of action would be decided after IT probe is over, they added.

It may be recalled that Sambalpur police had busted a currency exchange racket operating in the city where Rs 1.42 crore in scrapped and new notes were seized. Eight accused were taken into four-day judicial remand ending tomorrow.

The currency notes were seized from a liquor trader of Sunapali area.

While the Income Tax department is also investigating the source of such huge quantity of cash, Sambalpur Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Singh has written a letter to the ED asking it probe the incident.
