Odisha couple arrested for running ponzi firm

Police in the district headquarters town of Baripada in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district today arrested a couple on the charges of running a chit fund firm under the cover of an advertising agency.

SDPO Baripada Suresh Chandra Jena said that one Sujata Das and her husband Bharat Chandra Das, a Central government officer, were arrested on charges of running ponzi activities in the name of Sunray Advertisement at Baghda Road here.

Though Sujata Das was officiating as the director of the agency, her husband Bharat was operating the agency. The police arrested the Das couple while their son Abhishek is absconding, the SDPO said.

Police said the Das couple had allegedly received deposits from the public worth about Rs One crore by luring investors with the promise of doubling their money within two years.

A case has been registered against the Das couple under various sections of IPC based on the complaint of a person, it added.
