Odisha: Couple held in Puri Gang-Rape case

Puri: Police today arrested a couple for their alleged involvement in the sensational Puri gang-rape case. The accused have been identified as Ranjit Parida and Soumya Shefalika Parida, informed Puri SP Uma Sankar Dash at a presser.

The duo had brought the victim from Bhubaneswar to Puri, police sources said. Cops had earlier arrested four persons– Bulu Barik, a CRPF jawan, Rama Chandra Pradhan, Jeetendra Sethy, a dismissed police constable, and Rajesh Sethy in connection with the case. Case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the IPC and POCSO Act.

Notably, a minor girl was on December 2 allegedly gang-raped inside a police quarter near Jhadeswari Club in Puri town. The girl said she was waiting for a bus at the Nimapara bus terminal to go to her home in Kakatpur area in Puri district.

“I was returning to Kakatpur from Bhubaneswar in a bus. I alighted from the bus at Nimapara to have food and missed the bus. Later, when I was standing at the Nimapara bus terminal, a person introduced himself as a policeman by showing his identity card and offered help,” the survivor told media persons. Later, four persons took her to the official quarter in Puri and two of them raped her, she said.
